Halloween Decorating Tips

Fall is the most popular season to decorate for. The scents, the colors, the themes.. All of the choices can be wonderful and overwhelming at the same time. Pumpkins, witches, and ghosts, oh my! Try to get a handle on things by figuring out a theme for each room in the home. Narrowing things down a bit can not only make it easier on the mind but the wallet as well. Forget the small things. Less is always more and the larger, better quality pieces will make a bigger, richer statement than the smaller less noticeable ones. Not only is this age-old idea better for the bank account but it helps keep the home looking clean and un-cluttered for the holidays too, and who doesn’t appreciate that?

Themed rooms are fun! Decorating each room is exciting, challenging, and rewarding, especially when you get to witness the surprised and delighted looks on your guests’ faces afterwards. It’s fun for your guests as well. Going from room to room figuring out the theme, experiencing the colorful décor, and breathing in your chosen scents can bring back those nostalgic feelings of childhood, making the visits even more pleasurable.

Decorated and lighted trees have become popular for every day décor and Halloween is no different. Black trees, decorated with pumpkin and witch ornaments has become the rave of the age and there’s no wonder. These decorating tools can make a huge statement without much effort. Enlist the help of your children and place wrapped candy bars on the branches for a delightfully delicious look.

Have taper candles laying around but no idea how to use them?? Take a clear glass vase, a bag of orange and white candy corn, your tapers, and mix. Pour the candy corn inside the vase, then plant the tapers (preferably battery-operated ones) into the candy corn. It’s an easy and eye-catching decoration idea that you can use to accent your fall displays. Use it on the dining room table with a colorful runner and orange, dried wreath or you can place them on either side of a larger, decorative piece on a side table or fireplace. Again, another project that can encourage a corroborative effort of the entire family, which is the point of the holidays anyway.

Cooking for the holidays can be stressful and Thanksgiving is probably the biggest cooking day of the entire year, so the kitchen needs to be a sanctuary rather than a jail cell. Use pumpkins to spruce up your kitchen, several of them in fact. Carved and un-carved, decorated and un-decorated, pumpkins have a calming affect and not only in pie. Take the time with the family to go out and buy pumpkins to carve together, or if you don’t have time, look for the realistically carved pumpkins that can come with inspirational messages on the front. Place them strategically around the kitchen, even above the cupboards, and don’t forget to group them. You’ll be glad you did!

I was so excited when I was asked to decorate a window at a restaurant in Old Town, Alexandria VA. The name of the restaurant is Taverna Cretekou they specialize in Greek cuisine. I decided not to decorate it the traditional Halloween theme. I was really pleased how it all came together.

Something about our family room just wasn't right, but we just couldn't figure out what it was. That is dawned on us that it was the exposed brick wall in the room. The brick wall didn't give us the feel of an old world stone, rather it gave us the feel of cold and dirty.

We are so happy on the way it turned out. The room is now no longer old and dated. It was the perfect makeover our family room needed. Now it is the exciting time to buy accessories for the room!

This a picture of the cutest chair ever! When I saw this chair I had to have it. This was the first item I bought for my new house. The black and white chair is in the master bedroom. I am a first time home buyer and wanted to share with you my living room. It is still a work in progress. I just moved in 3 weeks ago. I just found this great damask carpet from target. I love it. My curtains I found at Jcpenny's I enjoy how the color changes during the course of the day. The material on the curtains is an iridescent satin which I just love. What do you think? Do I need to introduce a new shade of color in the room? A red? Or keep it the way it is. I really like the feel of a clean sophisticate contemporary feel for a home.

Easy Spring Decorating Ideas

With spring right around the corner, many people are beginning to put away their fall and winter décor for one that helps embody the season of renewal. There are a wide variety of ways to easily change the design of one or more rooms in your home that are fun, affordable, and not very time-consuming. Take at the following list of spring decorating ideas and see which ones you could implement at your house.

Seasonal Fruit and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables can add an affordable splash of color along with adding a natural element to the design of a room. Bright green apples, citrus fruits, and other colorful seasonal favorites are easy to find and last fairly well when displayed.

Emphasize Your Windows

Windows allow lots of wonderful natural light in and really open up a room. Draw back the shades and use light, airy fabrics for window treatments that allow for privacy without compromising the natural light that’s being let in.

Change Accent Pillows and Remove Throws

Pillows are another fast and affordable way to change the look of any room between seasons. Pick some colors that pop against your neutral tones and revive any room with ease in just seconds. Fall and winter pillows and throws can be stored for next year or replaced next year and given to a charitable organization.

Rotate Accessories

Just as easily as pillows and throws can be changed, added, or removed, so too can accessories. Even rotating items from room to room can create gentle shifts in attention and focus while still helping give the room in question that “put together” feel. New accessories can be used in this rotation when purchased, or you can choose to have accessories that are stored and used at specific times of year.

Change out Plates and Glassware

Another quick fix that can either be purchased over time or that can be shifted gradually; glassware and plates can add to the overall seasonal feeling of a home and are a great subtle detail that shows that you are on top of your game. Consider changing out one or both of these items when redecorating for the spring.

STEP ONE: String lights onto tree. The more the merrier. A hint to see if you missed a spot on the tree just squint your eyes a tad bit and the glare should be well spread.

STEP TWO: Add ribbon to add depth in your tree. Just unrole the ribbon off the spool and wrap it around like a candy cane strip. STEP THREE: Add large statement piece into your tree. Poinsettas, Feathers, and Large Balls. Group them together to make a larger statement. Keep a even flow to keep a natural flow to your eye.

STEP FOUR: Add the rest of your favorite ornaments. Snowflakes, glass ornaments, and leaping dear. A tip for making you artifical tree smell real, hide a Christmas Wreath car jar from YANKEE CANDLE in the tree and no one will ever know.

I am starting Halloween early this year. The reason I started early this year is so we can have time to enjoy the fall season. It always seems to come and go so fast. My inspiration were the BOO Pumpkins that I sat on top of some black rod iron candle sticks. I just knew that this vignette need something dramatic. I found just the perfect table cloth that would give this effect. I love this black and white Damask tablecloth.

You don't know how excited our employee Jamie and I were putting this display together. We even had a spooky Halloween sounds playing on the CD player to get us in full Halloween Spirit.

I love Bethany Lowe pieces. I was a little disappointed that she broke. I scatter her amongst the table. I really like the feel of this. I think she fits in. It really spooked me out.

Summer's Coming to an End

I recently came back from visiting my parents in Greece. They are staying at a small island called Ikaria. I took some photos to share with you our beach house. I love how we used 2 colors that people seem to be scared to use in there home, RED and BLACK. We sent a container overseas with all the items you see. Most of the decorations are from our store Classics and Country.

No living space can ever be perfect. Leave me some feedback on some improvements you can see. I really enjoyed spending time with my parents at there beach house. I was proud to be able to decorate there home for them. I had alot of fun in doing so.

All week we have been getting all our new Halloween Items in. I love this time of the year. So many beautiful things came in. I just love the little children in there costumes. The artist that makes them is Bethany Lowe Designs. I am so glad I found her. I love her products. Hope you enjoy my vingettes I am starting early this year with decorating. I love how she titles her webpage, "Jennifer Murphy (bears and other silly things) A website of fun little bitties! "That says it all. Her pieces are so unique and adorable. For example, I want you to meet Pearl the Balancing Pin Cushion. I love her, I enjoyed photographing her.

Jennifer has even been aired on the Martha Stewart Show pick videos # 5 and 6.

Today was such a beautiful day so I decided to bring the indoors out. I did this display outside my store. I was trying to get the best lighting possible. Do you think I could of improved the lighting of the photo? I am so excited I just got a new Camera it is a Nikon. It's the most professional Camera I have ever had. I am so excited about it. Our Beach House

Here is a peak at what my parent's summer home looks like. I was lucky I had an opportunity to design it myself. I decided to go a little more tasteful than there tradional look they always tend to, since it is their sumer house. I am sure they are happy with the result. As you can see the color scheme I picked is red, black and white with hints of khaki. When I saw the red couches I knew I had to have them. To soften the bright red I accented it with black pillows. All the furniture has that distressed look to it. As if it once belonged to my greatgrandmother. A way to get the distressed look is quite easy. Grad a hammer and just bang away, or even a bag of pennies can do the trick.

I guess my mom did like it look at that smile.

Outdoor Furniture

Today a young couple stopped by our store. The couple drove in with a large truck from Dale City, Florida all the way to Alexandria, VA. The women and her husband were selling Outdoor Furniture made of Cypress Wood. This type of wood typically grows in wet and swampy areas. I found this great site that explains more about this type of wood; Cypress This is a picture of a Cypress Tree. This is a photo of the furniture we bought. Each one is handmade by her and her husband. The great thing about this furniture is that it loves the water, that means it's weather proof. I love them so much, I can't wait to take a set to my house. Can you imagine having this chair in your garden, admiring the view. How peaceful!
